About the Reserve

Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary is a hidden jewel, which is rich in flora and fauna and wide variety of birds and mammals call it their home. Situated in Raisen and Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh, it spreads over 825.90 sq km. Sitting in the lap of Vindyan hills, the sanctuary encompasses a World Heritage Site “Bhimbetka Rock Shelters” and many other historical and religious destinations like Ginnourgarh Fort, POW camp, Keri Mahadeo, Ratapani dam, Jholiyapur dam etc. Its close proximity to the capital Bhopal and its relatively untouched forests makes it a promising attraction for tourists.

  • Flora & Fauna
  • The forest in Ratapani is dry deciduous and moist deciduous type, with one of the finest teak (Tectona grandis) as the main tree species. About 55 percent of area is covered by teak. The remaining mixed forests consist of various dry deciduous species. Bamboo forest and evergreen Saja Forest in between provides the variety a tourist asks for.
  • Sanctuary is home to more than 35 species of mammals, 33 species of reptiles, 14 species of fishes and 10 species of amphibians. 104 species of butterflies welcome tourists with gorgeous and attractive colors. Rhythmic sounds of 249 species of birds, wind and water easily takes away all the tension from one’s mind and fill it with positive vibes.
  • More than 40 tigers can make your day with their majestic carefree walk. Many other species such as leopard, sloth bear, hyena, spotted deer, sambar deer etc. are also there to show you, their home.

  • The best time to visit sanctuary is 15 October to 15 June.

Tourism Zone & Carrying Capacity

Ratapani sanctuary has 3 gates, Jhiri, Delawadi and Bhimbetka. For Jhiri and Delawadi gates safari can be booked through online as well as at the entry gate and tourists get entry through vehicles registered with sanctuary only. For Bhimbetka, safari can be booked offline only and tourists can go by their private vehicles.
